A drawing of Pitsmoor Village School

Dating back to 1836, this was possibly the first school in the area. It was a church school, founded by subscription and donations from the Watson family of Shirecliffe. When it first opened, it catered for boys only, but in 1857 an extension was added to include a school room for girls. Located on Pitsmoor Road in what was the heart of the old Pitsmoor village, part of the original stone building still stands. It is hidden behind the modern block of offices belonging to Unigraph Printing. The date 1836 can still be seen carved above the doorway at the side of the building The tall chimneys seen in the drawing below can also be seen in the background of the photograph of Pitsmoor Toll Bar in 1900, in the previous page on Toll Bar Cottage.
