About the Project
  Scenes from the filming of 'The Corner Shop' video, made in Burngreave 'The Corner Shop' video, made especially for a new display within the Sheffield life and times gallery in Weston Park Museum in Sheffield. This illustrates the role local shops play in their community, and features many well known Burngreave shop keepers and customers. It presents a lively picture of the area, showing how the ethnic diversity of local shops really helps keep the neighbourhood alive. Local exhibitions on local themes, incorporating photographs of weddings and interesting buildings in the area like the old workhouse (now the Northern General hospital in Sheffield). Also a collection of memory boxes, made by women from St James' United Reformed Church in Burngreave, told wonderful stories of different aspects of peoples' lives. Drama workshops in Burngreave primary schools for Black History Month celebrations. These tell the story of Olaudah Equiano, the famous freed slave and campaigner. An oral history archive, involving interviews with over 30 local residents. Ten local people were trained as interviewers and recruited as to record interviews with other residents of Burngreave. The recordings are available in Burngreave Library and tell the stories of diverse lives. Local events for families and children including an old fashioned tea party in a local park, (Devon Gardens); a 'Make an Egyptian Mummy' painting day for children; trips to exhibitions in Sheffield and other cities and a local history walk around the area. An education pack for Burngreave primary schools, containing copies of photographs and old documents to teach the history of the area. Work placements for three local people to gain experience of working in a museum setting. The project was a partnership between Sheffield Galleries and Museums Trust and Sheffield Libraries and Information. The staff team were Nikky Wilson, project officer and Kim Streets, project manager. It was funded by Burngreave New Deal for Communities Partnership. |
