Burngreave Wesleyan Methodist Church in the early 1900s

The original church was a large stone building which served the upper classes in Burngreave. It was built on Burngreave Road in the1880s during a period when many neighbourhood churches began to appear in the area. During the Second World War, the building suffered a direct hit by a bomb and was badly damaged. It then remained as a shell until 1957 when it was rebuilt. Steel girders were used to create a reinforced frame inside the old stone exterior. In 1973 a decision was made to unite congregations from Burngreave Road Methodist and Andover Street Methodist New Connexions Church on the condition that a new church was built to replace the old ones. This resulted in the demolition of Burngreave Methodist Church, a task which proved extremely difficult due to the steel reinforcements. Two stone gateposts facing onto Burngreave Road are evidence of the older church's existence. In place of the old church are the Foundry Court Housing Association and the present Pitsmoor Methodist Church and Community Centre.
