Twenty first century Burngreave as home Shops along Barnsley Road in Burngreave © Carl Rose Mahmoud Brasab lives and works in Burngreave, having come with his family from Somalia in 1993 when he was just 10 years old. He was interviewed by Tesfay Sengal for the Burngreave Voices oral history archive in January, 2006. Burngreave is very different compared to other areas. I think it's a unique place because, if you walk down the street, you know that ninety percent of the time you will see somebody that you know. Even if you don't know people, they still greet you with a smile, which you don't get in other areas. There is also a good mixture of people from different backgrounds and different religions. It's a place which you feel is for everyone. That's nice! And it's getting better. In the past I have felt that I didn't want to tell people that I was from Burngreave, or that I was working in Burngreave. Whereas now, you feel proud to be part of Burngreave and to tell people, 'that's where I'm from'. |
