In 1876 the parish church of St Catherine was established on Andover Street. A church and school were built on the site, paid for by the Duke of Norfolk. During the 1880s the parish thrived and the church was moved to a larger temporary building. Finally, in 1926 a new church opened on Burngreave Road. It was another 25 years before the building was consecrated as this could not be done until all debts were paid off. It is noted for its Romanesque tower and imposing frontage.
