She wrote this piece in November 2006. Almost thirty years ago I was visiting Harlech Castle in Wales with a group from the West Indian Club in Sheffield. One of the group, Stuart Brown, had grown up in the West Indies singing 'Men of Harlech' in school. He had always wondered what the place was like so we arranged a day trip. Harlech then was a small place with little in the way of entertainment once the castle was exhausted. To while away the time whilst waiting for the coach to pick us up for the journey home, a couple of people went into the village hall where a flower show was underway. A few minutes later they appeared, waving their arms and shouting, 'Come and look at this!' We all scrambled to pay the few coppers entrance fee to find that the second best-in-show prize had been won by a plant that was a weed in Jamaica - a 'blusher'!
