Albert Bottom, a Burngreave resident in the early 1900s, was a member of a local brass band. In the photograph below, taken around the 1920s, he is the fourth man on the right, in the middle row, holding a cornet. There is no indication of the name of this band but it might have been the Grimesthorpe or the Spital Hill band, both are mentioned in his diaries. The band sometimes played at events or marches. There are records in Albert's diary of the band getting paid to do so but although they took part in music competitions, they never won any prizes, according to the diaries.
