The theme for Refugee Week 2024 is ‘Our Home’, which has inspired this display. It explores themes of identity, belonging and resilience. It draws together stories about those who have been left behind, and those who are making new homes in Sheffield.
There are 11 hand embroidered pieces on display, all on the theme of home some written in Dari, Pashto and Arabic. There is also a group art-work which is a head scarf made up of flags that have been sewn together to represent representing countries where group members are from, the journeys they’ve made and their new home in Sheffield.
The Refugee Council is a leading charity working with refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK. Founded in 1951 following the creation of the UN Refugee Convention, we exist to support and empower people who have fled conflict, violence and persecution in order to rebuild their lives here in the UK.
The theme for Refugee Week 2024 is “Our Home”.
Home can be more than one place and finding it can be a journey, as it is for so many of us who have to leave our countries and rebuild our lives. Sometimes we can find home in a single person. Other times it’s in a whole community. And often, it’s in a single gesture of care and welcome.
