Sheffield Assay Office: Marking 250 Years of Lasting Impressions

Sat 9 September 2023 - Sun 8 September 2024

Millennium Gallery

Dating back to the 13th century, the process of assaying and hallmarking precious metals is one of the earliest forms of consumer protection. This new display in the Sykes Gallery Metalwork Collection tells the story of Sheffield Assay Office, established in 1773 and one of only four remaining Assay Offices in the UK.

See a range of objects and material chronicling the history of this unusual company, including items from Sheffield’s Metalwork Collection alongside loans from Sheffield Assay Office and Sheffield Archives.
