The exhibition brought together over 30 works from the National Portrait Gallery and Sheffield’s own collection, including portraits of Alex Turner, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Sean Bean, Self Esteem, Otis Mensah, Helen Sharman, Mary, Queen of Scots and more. Visitors were able to discover some of Sheffield’s little-known connections with famous names, including US aviator Amy Johnson and founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale.
The works went on display alongside a striking bus shelter installation created by Sheffield artist Conor Rogers and students at Sheffield Park Academy, exploring ideas of place, community and inspiration.
Creative Connections was a national participation project for young people and artists which sees the National Portrait Gallery work with the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum in Coventry, Sheffield Museums, Southampton City Art Gallery, and Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange. Find out more here
