The 1984/5 miners’ strike was the longest national strike in British history. Over 140,000 members of the National Union of Mineworkers went on strike to protect jobs and communities against proposed pit closures.
The strike lasted for nearly a year. In that time, communities pulled together to provide collections of cash, food and clothing for striking miners and their families. Many women found their political voice through Women Against Pit Closures.
