Off the Shelf Festival: Writing on the Wall - Madeleine Pelling in conversation with Dr Caroline Dodds Pennock

Sat 26 October 2024 , 3pm-4pm

Millennium Gallery

What if walls could talk? Writing on the Wall explores graffiti and rebellion in eighteenth century Britain.

It reveals lost voices from the highest to the lowest in society - political prisoners, sex workers, homesick sailors and Romantic poets and the artisans of the industrial revolution.

Here are lives, loves, triumphs and failures scratched into the walls, chalked up on doors and etched into windows. Their creators’ names may be lost to history, but they tell the real story of Britain's most transformative century.

This event is part of Off the Shelf: Festival of Words from the University of Sheffield. The full festival programme is available here: https://offtheshelf.org.uk/events/
