Off the Shelf Festival: Little Englanders: Britain in the Edwardian Era - Alwyn Turner

Sat 19 October 2024 , 11am-12pm

Millennium Gallery

Alwyn Turner reconsiders the Edwardian era as a time of profound social change with the rise of women's suffrage, the labour movement, unrest in Ireland, scandals in parliament and culture wars at home.

This illustrated talk tells the story of the Edwardians through music halls, male beauty contests, the real Peaky Blinders and the 1908 Summer Olympics.  A detailed, entertaining social history that reveals, though the golden Victorian age was over, the birth of modern Britain was only just beginning.

This event is part of Off the Shelf: Festival of Words from the University of Sheffield. The full festival programme is available here: https://offtheshelf.org.uk/events/
