On the left of the frame, there is a horse drawn cart, whose driver has pulled over for a chat with someone on the street. To the right, there are five men sorting out a large delivery of packages. Behind them, the streets and buildings retreat back into the painting. A cropped image of Godfrey Sykes' painting Norfolk Street and Pinstone Street with St Paul's Sheffield. Norfolk Street and Pinstone Street are familiar street names in Sheffield’s city centre. But they looked vastly different in 1858.

This painting by Godfrey Sykes (1824 - 1866) is called Norfolk Street and Pinstone Street with St Paul’s, Sheffield. Part of Sheffield’s Visual Art collection, it can be seen alongside other views of Sheffield in the Picturing Sheffield display in the Gordon Bridge Gallery at Weston Park Museum.

Our Talking Art series digs deeper into some of the highlights from the city’s museum collections. Find out more about the stories behind the artworks and how they were created.
