Sheffield Estelí Society

Tue 15 April - Sun 6 July 2025

Millennium Gallery

Sheffield has been twinned with Estelí, a town in northern Nicaragua, since 1984. The Sheffield Estelí Society promotes information sharing and twinning opportunities between Sheffield and Estelí and the things which make our two cities special.

The display includes items and photos from Nicaragua, material relating to the city twinning process, and information about the 1979 revolution. Following demonstrations in 2018 calling for reform, and the violent backlash the demonstrators received, political protests were made illegal in Nicaragua. The display also includes the Sheffield response in support of the demonstrators, as well as quotes from Nicaraguans who have come to Sheffield seeking asylum.
