Lunchtime Talk: Heart of the City – The Archaeology of Coal Pit Lane, Backfields and Carver Street

Wed 10 December 2025 , 1pm-1:45pm

Kelham Island Museum

Join Ashley Tuck from Wessex Archaeology to hear a selection of fascinating archaeological stories behind some of Sheffield’s city streets.

Wessex Archaeology have been at the forefront of excavation work and recording archaeological remains in the centre of Sheffield for the Heart of the City project. Join their Research Manager Ashley as he offers biographies of the Coal Pit Lane, Backfields and Carver Street thoroughfares, detailing how the fringes of the medieval settlement developed into a dense patchwork of industrial activity. He’ll also discuss how the current changes in Sheffield city centre are only the latest in a long line of development and redevelopment.
