Lunchtime Talk: “Give us a kiss and say no more about it”: Working-Class Men and Same-Sex Desire in Industrial Sheffield

Wed 18 June 2025 , 1pm-1:45pm

Kelham Island Museum

Join Dr Helen Smith to discuss the queer goings on in Sheffield in the 60 years between 1897 and 1957.

In this talk we’ll encounter a fascinating range of men and their stories, which are moving, funny, shocking and crucially, specific to their class and home city.

Sheffield and the steel industry that dominated it had a real impact on how men experienced their masculinity and sexuality, and we’ll find out how this focus on our city and our industry, has changed histories of same-sex desire for the better.
