You’ll enjoy a rare opportunity to hear directly from the artist about his practice, influences, and the relationship between his photography and his humanitarian work. Hamzah will discuss his ongoing documentary project, The Flower and The Wall – The Stateless Youths of Semporna, a collaborative photography work with the stateless children in his home country Malaysia.
For the past two years, Hamzah has been volunteering as an art and photography teacher for an NGO that provides free education to marginalised and stateless children in the east Malaysian state of Sabah.
Byron Mohammad Hamzah is a Malaysian documentary photographer and has an MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography from University of the Arts, London. His work has been featured in the Taylor Wessing Photo Portrait Prize 2025 and 2023, the Paris Photo Carte Blanche Award, and Europe Queer Photo Festival 2022. Mohammad Hamzah was also a winner in the 2020 Portrait of Britain Photography Prize.
This talk forms part of the programme of events complementing the exhibition Taylor Wessing Photo Portrait Prize 25 which is on display at Millennium Gallery from Saturday 21 February to Sunday 10 May.
