1937, 1950, 2025: Sheffield and Picasso during the Spanish Civil War

Tue 11 March - Mon 9 June 2025

Weston Park Museum

During the Spanish Civil War, nearly 4,000 children were evacuated. 25 came to stay at Froggatt Guest House, near Sheffield, where they received English lessons from students from Firth Park School.

The display features information and archive material about the children who came to Derbyshire as refugees, the International Brigades, who volunteered to fight in Spain, and Picasso’s involvement in fundraising and the 1950 Peace Conference.

This display has been created to coincide with the unveiling of a new statue of Picasso as a young boy, by artist Anthony D Padgett, in Weston Park from 12th April.

With loans from the BCA’37UK, Anthony D Padgett, and the Bill Moore Collection, Sheffield Archives.
