***The museum will close at 4pm on Thu 18 Sep for an event***
Through a playful gathering of artwork, artefacts and archival material, the Heavy Water Collective will explore past and current engagements with the land. As we mark the 150th anniversary of Weston Park Museum, Heavy Water Collective (Maud Haya-Baviera, Victoria Lucas and Joanna Whittle) will present a response to the city's museum collections, creating an exhibition that translates its themes and stories in a contemporary context.
Working with a team of co-curators with lived experience of South Asian heritage, this display will tell stories of people living in Sheffield today and ask what should be collected to represent Sheffield and its people.
It will be a vibrant reflection of what is valued and representative of Sheffield’s communities today, including donations, loans and new acquisitions, which will go on display alongside items from the existing collections.
This new display in the What on Earth gallery will explore the history of the museum, revealing the stories behind the collections, their origins and how they came to Sheffield.
It will offer visitors an insight into the role and motivations of the founding collectors and key protagonists who were instrumental in the formation of the museum. The display will include a focus on ornithologist, traveller and collector Henry Seebohm (1832-1895), considered one of Britain's greatest ornithologists.
