Spotlight: Sheffield Simplex

Join our Head of Engineering as we take a special journey in our one-of-a-kind 1920 Sheffield Simplex, one of only three left in existence. Watch as we maintain and prepare this incredible piece of automotive history before taking it for a drive to Wentworth Woodhouse, Yorkshire.

At the turn of the 20th century, Sheffield was home to nine car manufacturers, including Sheffield Simplex, which aimed to create the greatest car in the world using the finest Sheffield steel. Although the company closed after WWI, this remarkable vehicle still runs today.

Driving the Simplex is a completely different experience from modern cars as its size, weight, and handling make it a true engineering marvel. Thanks to our dedicated museum team, we ensure it remains preserved exactly as it left the factory over a century ago.

With ongoing care and skilled hands behind the wheel, there’s no reason why this car won’t still be running in another 100 years!

Our Spotlight series takes you behind the scenes at Sheffield Museums, uncovering the stories behind our collections and the work that goes into preserving them.
